Chapter 6
Sage called his name and hurried to meet him at the curb. âI got the report you saw someone.â
Avoiding eye contact, Garrett burned with frustration all over again. âWhen I lost him, I decided it would be best to try and find his vehicle.â He stopped to exhale some of his irritation. âBut I didnât find any vehicle. I donât know how he got in here. I drove every street in the subdivision and then down each road that leads to it for at least two miles. Would he come farther than that on foot?â
Sage shrugged. âDonât know. Where did you first spot him?â
He pointed to the backyard. âI lost him in the woods behind the subdivision. The snow cover was thinner and then I hit a rocky patch, lost his tracks, and hit the snow fence. From what I saw, no one had gone over it.â
âOkay.â Sage lifted the flashlight from her belt. âLetâs go. See if he dropped anything, and photograph the footprints.â
He led her to where he fell and then to the spot he last saw the figure.
âYouâre limping. How did you fall?â
What had tripped him?
After digging in the snow, he saw that some careless person had left a rake lying in the yard. That had done him in.
Sage focused her flashlight on his knee. âThose prongs did a number on your knee. Youâre bleeding.â
At her words, his knee began throbbing in earnest. âItâs all right.â
âNo, it isnât. Letâs go backââ
âI want to photograph the footprintsââ
âI will after I look at your knee.â
He tried to object.
âThe footprints arenât going anywhere. And taking care of that knee now will prevent swelling that could slow you down, sideline you. Canât have that for the next chase.â She grabbed his elbow and turned him.
He allowed her to lead him back to his car. âBossy, are we?â
She chuckled and motioned for him to sit with his door open.
The sound of her laughter eased the tightness around his lungs. She somehow even lightened his frustration over failing to nab the guy. Again the sensations from massaging her shoulder on Sunday afternoon flowed through him. Get a grip.
Soon she returned with a couple of plastic bags and a first aid kit. He held the flashlight while she examined his knee. Her touch caused him pain and he drew in a breath against it and against her touch. Then she opened her first aid kit and said, âHere we go.â
He sucked in air. The antiseptic stung more than heâd expected.
After applying a large plastic bandage, she filled one of the bags with snow, doubled it with another bag, and pressed it against his knee.
He swallowed a gasp. The ice intensified the pain.
âWe need to keep it from swelling more. I donât think you damaged the knee. If it gets worse, you might want to go to the clinic to have it x-rayed. Are you up to date on your tetanus shot?â
âItâs no big deal. Itâs justââ
âYou donât know what itâs âjust.â It could be âjustâ a lot of things.
